Finaps automatically categorizes every transaction you add. The system uses three tiers to maximize accuracy while minimizing AI costs.
The first pass uses a rule engine with 200+ keyword patterns. For example, "Starbucks" or "Costa Coffee" automatically maps to the "Coffee" category. Rules run instantly with zero AI cost. This catches about 60–70% of transactions.
If no rule matches, a lightweight machine-learning model analyzes the merchant name, amount, and time of day. For instance, a $12 charge at 12:30 PM from an unknown merchant is likely "Lunch". This catches another 15–20%.
For the remaining ~10–15% that neither rules nor heuristics can classify, the transaction description is sent to our AI model for classification. This is the most accurate but has a small cost per query.
Finaps comes with 30+ default categories. You can create your own custom categories with a name, emoji, and color. Go to Settings → Categories → Add Category. Custom categories are available in all category pickers throughout the app.
When you manually change a transaction's category, Finaps learns from the correction. Future transactions with similar descriptions will be categorized accordingly.
